§ 17.9. Elective officers of the City:

  • The elective officers of the City, who hold office on the effective date of this Charter, shall continue to hold their office, subject to the provisions of the Charter hereinbefore provided. Each of the Council Members previously elected at large shall serve until his term expires or until his office shall become vacant. One Council Member shall be elected at large in the odd year election in 1995 and in the odd year election every four (4) years thereafter. A Council Member shall be elected from the Sixth Ward at the Primary Election in August, 1992 and shall serve until January 1, 1994. The Sixth Ward Council Member shall be elected for a four (4) year [term] in the odd year election for 1993 and at the odd year election every four (4) years thereafter. Council Members previously elected from the Second and Fourth Wards shall serve until January 1, 1994, with Council Members for the Second and Fourth Wards being elected in the odd year election in 1993, and in the odd year election every (4) years thereafter. Council Members previously elected from the First, Third, and Fifth Wards shall serve until January 1, 1996, with Council Members being elected from such wards in the odd year election in 1995, and every four (4) years thereafter. The Mayor, Clerk, and Treasurer previously elected shall continue in office until January 1, 1994, with the election of the Mayor and Clerk to be held in the odd year election in 1993 and every four (4) years thereafter. The Treasurer shall be elected in the odd year election in 1993 for a two (2) year term. The Treasurer shall continue in office until January 1, 1996, with the election of the Treasurer to be held in the odd year election in 1995, and every four (4) years thereafter. Nothing contained herein shall in any way limit the ability of any Council Member, Mayor, Clerk, or Treasurer from seeking any elective or appointive office in accordance with law. As used in the Charter, "odd year election" shall mean an election pursuant to MCL 168.644a et seq., MSA 6.1644(1) et seq. or any successor statute or amendments to such statutes.
